The ICON A5 is an American Light Sport Aircraft currently being developed by Icon Aircraft, that claims to bridge the gap between flying and other motorsports. Its development is a collaboration between an F-16 pilot and a banker turned skateboard designer. The A5 is an amphibious aircraft with carbon fiber airframe and retractable landing gear, enabling it to take off from water or landing strips. The A5 is one of only a handful of LSAs that is not tied to landing strip-based operations. It seats two people in an enclosed cockpit with wraparound canopy and is powered by a single internal combustion engine driving a pusher propeller. The side windows are removable. A pair of sponsons provides hydrodynamic stability and aids with occupant ingress/egress. Its high-wing design provides superior visibility and includes the ability to fold the wings aft, to facilitate transportation and storage.
